Summary of the final regulatory action:

The decree Negative list prohibits the import of this chemical. The Pesticide Law (2005) prohibits import, storage and use of this chemical.
The import was cancelled early 2004; however importers, sales persons and farmers were allowed to use existing stocks as it was considered the lowest-risk option for disposing of stocks of monocrotophos in the light of the risks associated with product recall, storage and disposal. It also allowed users time to change over the other pesticides.

Summary of known hazards and risks to human health:

Thre presence of residues of monocrotophos in vegetables posed a serious threat to public health and also threatened potential of export of vegtables, due to presence of unacceptable residues.

Expected effect of the final regulatory action in relation to human health:

Reduced risk to public health.

The possibility of disappearance of birds of prey and poisoning of other birds in and around rice fields by monocrotophos is discussed in the documentation below.
